We are a national staffing agency providing recruitment services in Atlanta for a client that serves the commercial construction industry.  We are actively looking to recruit a Plumbing Designer that is local to the Atlanta area for this client.

Our client is a nationally recognized Mechanical Contractor specializing in HVAC systems, commercial plumbing design, process piping, and building automation solutions for large-scale commercial, industrial, healthcare, education, and government facilities across the United States.

With a legacy of excellence in MEP engineering, the company provides full life-cycle support including design-build services, BIM coordination, construction, installation, commissioning, and long-term maintenance. Their engineering teams leverage cutting-edge 3D modeling, virtual design & construction (VDC), and Building Information Modeling (BIM) workflows to deliver high-performance, code-compliant mechanical systems that optimize energy efficiency, water conservation, system reliability, and total cost of ownership for clients.

This is an excellent opportunity for a seasoned Plumbing Designer to join a tech-forward organization with sophisticated engineering teams and a collaborative design environment.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design and develop commercial, industrial, and institutional plumbing systems, including domestic water, sanitary sewer, storm drainage, natural gas piping, medical gas systems, and specialty piping systems.
  • Prepare detailed plumbing construction documents, including schematics, riser diagrams, isometrics, P&IDs, equipment layouts, and material schedules.
  • Create and coordinate plumbing designs using AutoCAD MEP, Revit MEP, and BIM workflows to ensure clash-free integration with HVAC, electrical, structural, and architectural systems.
  • Perform accurate hydraulic calculations, fixture unit calculations, pipe sizing, water heater sizing, and pressure loss analysis using industry tools such as Elite Software, HASS, or Autodesk Building Systems.
  • Ensure all plumbing system layouts comply with local, state, and federal building codes, including UPC, IPC, IMC, NFPA, ASPE guidelines, ADA, NSF standards, and healthcare plumbing requirements.
  • Support design-build and design-assist project delivery by collaborating with project managers, engineers, estimators, and field supervisors.
  • Generate submittals, shop drawings, technical specifications, bill of materials (BOMs), and coordinated fabrication-ready plans.
  • Participate in site surveys, field investigations, and construction support, including responding to RFIs, reviewing contractor installations, and resolving design inconsistencies.
  • Work closely with VDC/BIM teams to support Navisworks clash detection, model coordination, and constructability analysis.
  • Assist in selecting plumbing fixtures, pumps, valves, backflow preventers, and specialty equipment based on performance, code compliance, and project requirements.
  • Maintain strict documentation and revision control to support QA/QC processes, commissioning, and system turnover packages.

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or related discipline preferred.
  • AS or Technical Degree in Drafting, Design Technology, or MEP Engineering may be considered with equivalent experience.
  • Additional credentials such as CPD (Certified in Plumbing Design) from ASPE are highly desirable.

Required Skills and Experience

  • 7+ years of experience in commercial plumbing design, mechanical design, or MEP engineering within commercial construction or mechanical contracting environments.
  • Proficiency with Revit MEP, AutoCAD MEP, and BIM workflow tools (Navisworks, BIM 360, Bluebeam Revu).
  • Strong knowledge of plumbing codes and design standards, including:
    • UPC, IPC, IMC, NFPA 13, NFPA 99, NFPA 54, ADA, ASPE standards, NSF/ANSI codes
    • Local jurisdiction requirements and health department regulations
  • Experience designing systems for commercial buildings, hospitals, manufacturing facilities, labs, cleanrooms, and government facilities.
  • Ability to perform pump sizing, booster system design, grease waste systems, storm water collection, and system efficiency calculations.
  • Solid understanding of HVAC and MEP coordination, ensuring seamless integration of plumbing systems into full building design packages.
  • Strong experience preparing construction drawings, technical specifications, and engineering documentation.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven design environment with multiple stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate with engineers, architects, project managers, subcontractors, and field installation teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CPD (Certified in Plumbing Design) or working toward certification.
  • Experience in design-build, BIM coordination, prefabrication modeling, and lean construction workflows.
  • Familiarity with EPDM/PEX systems, medical gas design, specialty piping, and high-purity process piping.
  • Knowledge of sustainable plumbing design practices, including water conservation systems, low-flow fixtures, rainwater harvesting, and energy recovery systems.
  • Experience supporting commissioning activities such as system flushing, pressure testing, functional testing, and facility turnover.
  • Background in commercial, hospital, biotech, industrial, or government facility plumbing engineering.
