Reporting to the Vice President of IOL Development, the Senior Optical Scientist will lead the applied research of light-adjustable materials and their application to the human eye. Key responsibilities include developing multiphysics models to predict the optical response of the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) to light profiles designed to induce a targeted wavefront change. The individual will also be responsible for developing scientific understanding of structure-property relationships.

This individual will function as a technical expert and a key contributor to the development of Client treatment protocols for the LAL and interact with the other functions within the company including LAL Materials, Engineering, Operations, Quality, and Regulatory. It is expected that this individual will have the depth and breadth of experience and judgment to make contributions to the overall Light Delivery Device and Light Adjustable Lens technologies.


  • Lead development of Client light treatment options for the LAL .
  • Develop and maintain multiphysics models of the LAL
  • Perform analysis of the LAL response to light profiles and evaluate the impact of opto-mechanical and chemical properties of the LAL to induce the targeted wavefront change.
  • Contribute to product development of the LAL,
  • Document work and write reports.
  • Assist with continuous product improvements projects to improve the performance and quality of the LAL and digital light projector used to generate the light profiles.
  • Assist with adhoc projects and reports as needed.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of optical theory including ray and Fourier optics, optical aberration theory and its application to the design and analysis of optical components.
  • Theoretical and working knowledge of basic optical testing, e.g. interferometry, MTF, spectroradiometry, etc.
  • Solid background and understanding of the physics and optical properties of materials.
  • Proficient and extensive experience with optical design software and data analysis tools
  • Proven track of technical accomplishment and innovation as demonstrated by published articles and/or patents.
  • Effective analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to apply creative solutions to challenges.



  • Minimum requirements:
    • B.S. in Natural Sciences or Engineering and with a minimum of 2 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Demonstrated understanding of advanced data analysis algorithms and tools.
  • Desired Characteristics:
    • Ph.D. in Physics or Chemistry with 2 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Proficiency with advanced data analysis algorithms and tools Experience with multiphysics software from COMSOL
