Position Summary:
Our space/defense precision manufacturing client is seeking a senior-level metrology and inspection professional with expertise in advanced coordinate measuring machine (CMM) programming, dimensional verification, and quality systems compliance. This role will lead the creation of robust CMM programs, ensure measurement accuracy to tight aerospace tolerances, and drive inspection process improvements.
The successful candidate will act as the primary subject matter expert for measurement methodology, mentoring junior programmers/operators, supporting audits, and contributing to cross-functional quality initiatives.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
Advanced CMM Programming
- Develop, modify, and optimize complex CMM programs from 3D CAD models and engineering drawings using PC-DMIS at an advanced level.
- Configure measurement routines to handle intricate GD&T requirements in compliance with ASME Y14.5.
Inspection Planning & Execution
- Oversee and perform First Article Inspections (FAI), Detailed Inspection Plans (DIP), First Piece Inspections (FPI), in-process checks, and final release inspections on precision aluminum die cast parts, machined features, tools, and fixtures.
- Verify dimensional conformance on critical aerospace components, maintaining traceability through formal documentation.
Quality System
- Collaborate with engineering, production, and quality to support process capability studies (Cp, Cpk, Pp, Ppk), Measurement System Analysis (MSA), and root cause/corrective action (RCCA) initiatives.
- Participate in AS9100D and ISO 9001-driven quality management processes, including internal audits and customer quality reviews.
Leadership & Mentorship
- Train and mentor less-experienced CMM programmers and inspection staff in best practices for measurement methodology, software usage, and programming standards.
- Establish standardized work instructions, inspection protocols, and calibration records.
Technology & Process Improvement
- Evaluate and implement emerging metrology tools, fixtures, and automation opportunities to improve throughput, accuracy, and repeatability.
- Proactively identify dimensional or process-related issues, recommending corrective actions to maintain continuous improvement and lean manufacturing objectives.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED required; associate’s degree, technical certification in manufacturing technology, metrology, or mechanical engineering strongly preferred.
- 5–7+ years of direct CMM programming and operation in a manufacturing environment; aerospace and/or aluminum die casting experience highly desirable.
- Advanced PC-DMIS proficiency (Level 3 or equivalent).
- Expert-level understanding of GD&T and blueprint reading.
- Proven track record in SPC, Measurement System Analysis/Gage R&R (MSA), and Root Cause/Corrective Action (RCCA)
- Solid knowledge of AS9100D/ISO 9001 or similar quality frameworks.
- Experience with Mitutoyo or Hexagon CMM platforms.
- Familiarity with casting defect types, machining tolerances, and metallurgical properties of aluminum alloys.
- Six Sigma Green/Black Belt or Lean Manufacturing certification a plus.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
- Primarily a manufacturing and inspection lab environment, with exposure to die casting operations, machining, and dimensional measurement equipment.
- Requires standing and walking for extended periods, occasional lifting up to 25 lbs.
- Overtime or weekend shifts may be required during peak production cycles.
