Mechanical Design Engineer – HVAC Systems for Heavy Equipment
Location: Irving, TX
Industry Sector: Mobile/ruggedized Heating & Cooling Solutions for heavy-duty commercial & industrial equipment.
Employment Type: Full-Time | On-Site
Experience Level: Mid-Level (5–7 Years)

About the Company
Our client is a long-time designer and manufacturer of ruggedized, high-performance heating and cooling systems engineered specifically for high reliability, heavy-duty machinery and mobile industrial equipment operating in extreme environments. From mining and construction to military and agriculture, to-spec systems are known for durability, compact design, and engineering excellence. Their integrated packages are built to meet the most demanding thermal management challenges in mobile equipment—where failure is not an option.

Position Overview
We are hiring a Mechanical Design Engineer to join a tightly integrated engineering and manufacturing team. This individual will contribute to the full lifecycle of custom mobile HVAC system development—from 3D modeling and mechanical design to prototype builds and production launch.

You’ll be working on compact, high-efficiency heating and cooling systems that often require creative use of limited space, smart airflow design, and manufacturability within tight tolerances. The ideal candidate will bring solid design fundamentals, a strong command of SolidWorks, and proven metal forming/sheet metal experience working with fabricated enclosures, mechanical subassemblies, and HVAC components (e.g., compressors, blowers, evaporators).

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop mechanical components, enclosures, and subassemblies for mobile HVAC units using SolidWorks.
  • Apply knowledge of sheet metal design, manufacturing processes, and form-fit-function principles to create robust assemblies for vibration-heavy, heat-sensitive environments.
  • Release production-ready drawings, BOMs, and technical documentation in accordance with ASME Y14.5 standards.
  • Lead mechanical design reviews and proactively identify and correct design flaws before production.
  • Support prototype fabrication, hands-on testing, and troubleshooting of mechanical systems to ensure performance, reliability, and manufacturability.
  • Collaborate with electrical, controls, and manufacturing engineers to deliver complete, integrated solutions.
  • Maintain design compliance with ISO quality standards and perform design-for-manufacturability (DFM) evaluations.
  • Participate in product validation, performance testing, and iterative improvements based on test data and field feedback.
  • Work closely with internal production and external suppliers to resolve build issues and improve cost-efficiency.
  • Engage with customers and field teams to support system integration, serviceability, and technical problem-solving.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • 5–7 years of experience in mechanical product design, ideally within HVAC, off-highway, automotive, or mobile equipment industries.
  • Proficient in SolidWorks 3D CAD and experienced in detailed mechanical drafting and drawing release.
  • Strong background in sheet metal fabrication, machined parts, weldments, and thermal system design.
  • Working knowledge of HVAC system components, heat exchangers, and airflow design fundamentals.
  • Familiarity with design validation processes such as DFMEA, ISO compliance, and form-fit-function checks.
  • Experience with prototype builds, field testing, and collaborating with production/manufacturing teams.
  • Excellent project coordination, root-cause analysis, and professional communication skills.

Bonus Skills

  • Exposure to mobile HVAC design, refrigeration cycles, and/or compressor integration.
  • Experience in low-volume, high-mix manufacturing environments.
  • Familiarity with PLM systems and ERP integration for part release and BOM management.
