Company Overview
Our client is an engineering consulting firm specializing in the design and delivery of mission-critical infrastructure systems. Their work supports facilities where uptime is essential, including data centers, telecommunications infrastructure, and other high-reliability environments.
The team provides mechanical and electrical design services for systems such as cooling plants, HVAC systems, power infrastructure, and environmental control systems, working directly with facility owners and operators.
Position Summary
The Mechanical Design Engineer (Level I / II) supports the design and development of mechanical systems for mission-critical facilities. This role is focused on HVAC system design, equipment layout, and construction document development, working under the guidance of senior engineers.
This is a hands-on, design-oriented role where the engineer will contribute to system layouts, calculations, and coordination efforts across multiple projects. The position offers exposure to real-world infrastructure projects and collaboration with clients, contractors, and internal engineering teams.
Responsibilities
- Assist in the design of HVAC and mechanical systems for commercial, industrial, and mission-critical facilities
- Develop system layouts including ductwork, piping, and equipment placement
- Support the design of systems such as:
- Chilled water systems
- Air handling units (AHUs)
- CRAC / CRAH units (data center environments)
- Pumps and cooling towers
- Perform basic engineering calculations including:
- Heat gain / heat loss
- Airflow and ventilation requirements
- Equipment sizing support
- Prepare and modify construction drawings using AutoCAD and/or Revit
- Coordinate mechanical systems with electrical, architectural, and structural disciplines
- Assist in reviewing shop drawings and submittals
- Support construction-phase activities including field coordination and site visits
- Participate in project meetings and internal design reviews
- Maintain documentation and support development of project deliverables
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering
- EIT (Engineer-in-Training) certification preferred or in progress
- 1–5+ years of experience in mechanical design, HVAC, or building systems
- Experience with:
- HVAC system layouts
- Mechanical piping and duct routing
- Equipment selection support
- Familiarity with industry standards such as ASHRAE, NFPA, and building codes
- Proficiency with:
- AutoCAD and/or Revit
- Microsoft Office (Excel, Word)
Technical Skills
- Understanding of HVAC systems and mechanical design fundamentals
- Exposure to:
- Chilled water systems
- Air distribution systems
- Pumps, valves, and mechanical equipment
- Basic knowledge of building automation systems (Client) such as Trane Tracer or similar platforms
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings and specifications
- Understanding of construction documentation and design workflows
Preferred (Not Required)
- Exposure to mission-critical environments such as:
- Data centers
- Telecommunications facilities
- Labs or cleanrooms
- Internship or work experience in consulting engineering or mechanical contracting
- Familiarity with load calculation tools (Trane Trace, Carrier HAP, etc.)
