About the Role:
Our client is a mission-driven engineering and environmental health organization working throughout Alaska to improve essential infrastructure in underserved rural communities. As a Civil Engineer II, you’ll join a collaborative team delivering water, wastewater, and sanitation solutions in one of the most logistically and environmentally challenging regions in the U.S. This opportunity offers end-to-end involvement in projects—from conceptual design through commissioning—making it an ideal fit for an engineer seeking meaningful work, technical growth, and field-based impact.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design water treatment and storage facilities, distribution systems, and wastewater collection and treatment infrastructure.
- Prepare detailed construction documents, including plans, specifications, and cost estimates, using AutoCAD Civil 3D and related software.
- Participate in site visits and field investigations, perform basic surveying tasks, and collect field data for engineering analysis.
- Support project scope development in coordination with project managers and technical specialists.
- Provide engineering support during construction phases, including field inspections and contractor coordination.
- Review submittals, shop drawings, and vendor/contractor proposals; provide technical recommendations.
- Assist in the preparation of environmental and health impact assessments.
- Write engineering memoranda, project status updates, and technical reports.
- Help troubleshoot emerging infrastructure or design issues in collaboration with senior engineers and field teams.
- Travel to remote sites in small aircraft to support rural project execution as required.
Required Skills & Competencies:
- Proficiency in civil site layout and design.
- Strong working knowledge of AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and related engineering design platforms.
- Ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications, and survey data.
- Familiarity with water and wastewater system design principles.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience working collaboratively on multidisciplinary teams.
- Comfortable managing multiple tasks and shifting priorities in a field-based engineering setting.
- Strong interpersonal skills for working with community representatives and field personnel.
- Willingness to travel frequently throughout Alaska, including to rural communities via small aircraft.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of state and federal engineering regulations related to sanitation, infrastructure, and environmental health.
- Familiarity with rural utility development, especially in remote or extreme weather environments.
Education Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related field from an ABET-accredited institution (required).
- Candidates who are within 12 months of completing an eligible degree program may be considered.
Experience Requirements:
- Minimum of two (2) years of professional civil or environmental engineering experience.
- A Master’s degree may substitute for one year of experience.
- Equivalent combinations of relevant training and experience may also be considered.
