Company Overview
This U.S.-based manufacturer specializes in the design and production of high-precision electronic test and measurement equipment used in aerospace, defense, and commercial electronics environments. Their products support electromagnetic compliance testing, signal conditioning, high-frequency measurement, and power system qualification for mission-critical applications. The organization maintains a low-volume, high-complexity production environment where reliability, traceability, and engineering accuracy are paramount.
As the company continues updating legacy platforms and introducing new product architectures, they are seeking a Product Design Engineer to lead concept-through-release development of next-generation instrumentation.
Position Summary
The Product Design Engineer will own hardware development across the full product lifecycle — from requirements definition and schematic/PCB design through prototyping, test validation, design-for-manufacture, and release to production. This role blends analog and mixed-signal circuit design, control system development, and hands-on lab validation using professional test equipment. You will collaborate cross-functionally with manufacturing, applications engineering, quality, and field service to support both new product development and improvements to existing product lines.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Design, analyze, and validate analog, mixed-signal, and low-frequency RF circuits for instrumentation and test equipment applications.
- Develop embedded control electronics, including microcontroller-based systems, power regulation circuitry, and signal conditioning paths.
- Generate and maintain schematics, PCB layouts, BOMs, wiring diagrams, assembly documentation, and ECOs.
- Perform circuit simulation, tolerance and noise analysis, component selection, derating, and high-reliability design practices.
- Build and debug prototypes using oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, VNAs, LCR meters, power supplies, signal sources, and custom test jigs.
- Participate in design reviews, requirements development, root cause analysis, and corrective action activities.
- Collaborate with manufacturing engineering on DFM/DFT, component obsolescence, build support, and test fixture design.
- Provide engineering support to applications, technical support, and field service staff for advanced troubleshooting and customer-use cases.
- Prepare technical documentation including test reports, compliance records, operational notes, and release documentation.
Required Qualifications
- B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Physics, Computer Engineering or closely related field (M.S. preferred).
- 5–10+ years of experience developing electronic hardware products or instrumentation systems.
- Strong proficiency with schematic capture and PCB design tools (e.g., Altium, OrCAD, KiCad, PADS).
- Hands-on experience building, testing, and debugging circuits in a lab environment.
- Proficiency using industry-standard test equipment:
Oscilloscopes, network/spectrum analyzers, LCR meters, power analyzers, signal generators, etc. - Solid understanding of EMC/EMI fundamentals, shielding, grounding, filtering, and noise mitigation.
- Familiarity with industry and regulatory compliance standards such as MIL-STD-461, DO-160, CISPR, IEC 61000, etc.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience designing circuitry for precision measurement, high-stability analog front-ends, or low-noise amplifiers.
- Background working in aerospace, defense, RF instrumentation, power electronics, or related test equipment sectors.
- Experience with revision control systems (e.g., PLM, PDM, or Git-based workflows).
- Ability to read mechanical drawings and collaborate with mechanical engineers on enclosure design and thermal considerations.
