The Technical Writer will play a pivotal role in creating, organizing, and optimizing high-complexity technical documentation used across vehicle engineering, manufacturing, software development, service operations, and customer-facing user instructions.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop, write, edit, and maintain technical documentation, including service manuals, diagnostic guides, repair instructions, manufacturing work instructions, engineering specifications, system architecture guides, and safety documentation for EV and clean energy products.
- Translate highly technical engineering concepts into clear, accurate, user-friendly content for audiences including technicians, engineers, end users, installers, and field service personnel.
- Produce documentation for battery energy storage systems (BESS), EV propulsion systems, inverters, autonomous driving modules, sensors, firmware updates, charging stations, and solar energy solutions.
- Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams—mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, firmware, software, manufacturing, quality, and regulatory compliance—to gather technical information and verify documentation accuracy.
- Use CAD visualization tools (e.g., SolidWorks Composer, Siemens NX, CATIA Composer) to generate illustrations, exploded views, and system diagrams.
- Work within structured documentation frameworks such as S1000D, DITA, IEEE documentation standards, and company-specific technical publication processes.
- Create content for Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETMs) and digital service platforms, including multimedia instructional content and integrated troubleshooting steps.
- Ensure documentation complies with automotive and energy industry standards, including:
- ISO 26262 (Functional Safety)
- IATF 16949
- SAE J1939, J3016 (Automated Driving)
- UL 2580 (EV Batteries)
- UL 9540 / NFPA 855 (Energy Storage Systems)
- Support continuous improvement by updating legacy documents, improving template structures, and enhancing version control and traceability.
- Participate in design reviews, product testing, and validation activities to ensure documentation accuracy and alignment with product behavior.
- Support training, service engineering, and field operations with clear, actionable documentation packages.
Education
- Bachelor’s Degree in Technical Writing, English, Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field required.
- Master’s Degree or specialized certifications in technical communication, engineering, or documentation standards preferred.
Required Skills and Experience
- 10+ years of experience as a Technical Writer within automotive, EV manufacturing, advanced energy storage, aerospace, electronics, or high-technology industries.
- Expert proficiency with documentation tools and authoring platforms, including:
- Adobe FrameMaker, InDesign, Illustrator
- MadCap Flare
- XML/DITA authoring tools
- S1000D authoring suites
- SolidWorks Composer, PTC Arbortext, Siemens Teamcenter
- Strong understanding of EV systems, including:
- Lithium-ion battery architecture and BMS
- Electric drivetrains, inverters, onboard chargers
- ADAS / autonomous driving modules and sensor fusion
- CAN communication, diagnostics, firmware deployment
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, schematics, CAD models, control logic, and system block diagrams.
- Experience writing documentation for manufacturing processes, service procedures, assembly lines, robotic automation, and quality control workflows.
- Familiarity with ISO, SAE, UL, NFPA, IEC, and automotive regulatory frameworks.
- Excellent writing, editing, and information-architecture skills with a strong ability to simplify technical complexity.
- Proven track record managing documentation in fast-paced, iterative engineering environments with evolving product architectures.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience producing documentation for AI-driven autonomous driving platforms, lidar/radar systems, or sensor calibration tools.
- Background with EV fast-charging infrastructure, energy storage commissioning, or grid-level power system documentation.
- Knowledge of version control systems (e.g., Git, GitLab, Bitbucket).
- Ability to support creation of multimedia content, such as instructional videos, 3D animations, and interactive diagrams.
- Experience working with Agile development teams or within PLM environments such as Siemens Teamcenter, Windchill, or Dassault ENOVIA.
- Technical certifications such as Certified Technical Professional (STC), DITA Certification, or ASD Certified Technical Communicator.
