Their multidisciplinary team leverages Revit MEP, AutoCAD MEP, BIM coordination tools, and industry-standard engineering software to design innovative building systems that support today’s high-performance construction environment.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop complete MEP system designs, layouts, and construction documents for commercial, institutional, industrial, and public-sector building projects.
  • Prepare HVAC system layouts, ductwork plans, piping schematics, psychrometric analyses, and mechanical equipment schedules.
  • Draft and design electrical power distribution, lighting systems, low-voltage systems, panel schedules, single-line diagrams, and load calculations.
  • Produce plumbing system plans, including domestic water, sanitary, storm drainage, gas piping, and specialty system layout design.
  • Create 3D BIM models using Revit MEP, ensuring clash-free coordination with architectural, civil, structural, and fire protection disciplines.
  • Perform heating and cooling load calculations, ventilation design, energy modeling, and Title 24 or ASHRAE compliance analysis.
  • Coordinate with architects, general contractors, project managers, and trade partners throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Review engineering specifications, local code requirements, and quality control standards to ensure system compliance and constructability.
  • Conduct site surveys and field verifications to confirm existing conditions, equipment placement, and installation feasibility.
  • Participate in design review meetings, respond to RFIs, evaluate submittals, and support construction administration tasks.
  • Apply deep knowledge of ASHRAE standards, IMC, IEC, NFPA, NEC, local building codes, and energy efficiency guidelines.

Education

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Building Systems Engineering, Drafting/Design Technology, or related discipline.
  • Professional development or certification in Revit MEP, AutoCAD MEP, BIM Modeling, HVAC Design, or Electrical Building Systems Design is highly preferred.

Required Skills and Experience

  • 10+ years of hands-on MEP design experience supporting commercial construction, office-building, and multi-facility projects.
  • Advanced proficiency with Revit MEP, AutoCAD MEP, BIM 360, and Navisworks Manage for system modeling and clash detection.
  • Extensive experience producing mechanical HVAC drawings, electrical power/lighting plans, and plumbing system layouts.
  • Strong understanding of building system principles, including:
    • HVAC system design and load calculation methodologies
    • Electrical power distribution & lighting layouts
    • Plumbing and hydronic system design
    • Mechanical equipment sizing and selection
  • Ability to interpret and implement industry standards such as:
    • ASHRAE 55, 62.1, 90.1
    • NFPA 70 (NEC)
    • International Mechanical Code (IMC)
    • International Plumbing Code (IPC)
    • IECC energy code guidelines
  • Knowledge of sustainable building practices, energy modeling, life-cycle cost analysis, and system maintainability principles.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail, quality, and technical accuracy.
  • Ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams and communicate effectively with clients, architects, and contractors.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing systems for large commercial office buildings, educational facilities, corporate campuses, and government/institutional structures.
  • Familiarity with Title 24 energy compliance (California) or related regional energy standards.
  • Experience with CFD modeling, energy analysis tools, or HVAC simulation software such as Trane TRACE 3D Plus, Carrier HAP, or IES VE.
  • Strong understanding of MEP construction sequencing, field installation, and commissioning support.
  • Exposure to sustainable building rating systems (LEED, WELL, Green Globes).
  • Ability to mentor junior designers, provide design oversight, and support QA/QC processes.
