This company is known for end-to-end product development, supporting projects from initial concept, industrial design, and mechanical architecture through prototype manufacturing, testing, DFM/DFT improvements, and scaled production support. They are seeking an experienced Mechanical Designer & Drafter who can work collaboratively across cross-functional R&D teams, translating creative and technical ideas into accurate 3D CAD models, production-ready drawings, and detailed mechanical documentation.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop 3D CAD models, part designs, assembly structures, exploded views, and detailed mechanical drawings for electro-mechanical systems and energy-focused hardware.
- Produce and revise manufacturing prints including GD&T callouts, tolerance stacks, and fabrication notes aligned with ASME Y14.5 standards.
- Create bill of materials (BOMs) and maintain change control documentation within PLM/PDM environments.
- Support prototype development, including supplier drawing packages, fabrication liaison, and workshop hands-on integration when required.
- Translate system-level engineering requirements into dimensioned, manufacturable designs, including:
- Sheet metal enclosures
- Machined metal and injection-molded plastic components
- Weldments and structural frames
- Thermal management and cooling mechanisms
- Battery module mechanical housing and protective structures
- Collaborate closely with mechanical, electrical, firmware, test, and manufacturing teams to ensure seamless product integration.
- Prepare engineering change orders (ECOs), revision histories, configuration updates, and drawing markups.
- Assist with FEA interpretation, tolerance stack analysis, DFM/DFT optimization, and prototype test review documentation.
- Support design reviews, constructability reviews, and root cause analysis for mechanical issues.
- Ensure designs comply with industry best practices, regulatory considerations, and appropriate material and safety standards.
Education
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering Technology, Product Design, Drafting & Design, or related field.
- Equivalent experience in mechanical design and drafting for complex hardware systems is acceptable.
Required Skills and Experience
- 10+ years of experience in mechanical design, drafting, and 3D modeling for complex electro-mechanical or high-performance engineered systems.
- Advanced proficiency in CAD software, such as:
- SolidWorks
- Creo/Pro-E
- Siemens NX
- CATIA
- Autodesk Inventor
- Strong understanding of GD&T, mechanical tolerance analysis, and proper application of ASME Y14.5 standards.
- Experience designing components using:
- Sheet metal fabrication
- CNC machined metals
- Extrusions
- Plastic injection molding
- Composites and lightweight structure materials
- Familiarity with PLM/PDM tools such as Windchill, Teamcenter, Arena, Agile, or SolidWorks PDM.
- Ability to interpret electrical interface drawings, sensor layouts, and cable routing considerations for integrated systems.
- Proven success working from concept through prototype to production release.
- Strong communication skills and ability to contribute to design discussions with engineers, manufacturing teams, vendors, and internal leadership.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience designing battery modules, thermal enclosures, or energy storage system mechanicals.
- Exposure to vehicle chassis systems, robotic assemblies, or actuation mechanisms.
- Familiarity with aerospace lightweighting strategies, high-strength materials, and composite layup considerations.
- Hands-on prototyping or shop experience (rapid prototyping, manual inspection, basic machining/assembly).
- Understanding of system safety, environmental durability, and IP/EMI shielding considerations for outdoor or mission-critical equipment.
- Experience coordinating with contract manufacturers (CMs) and international supply chains.
