We are an Atlanta, Georgia engineering and design staffing agency specialized in the recruitment of HVAC Designers for companies that fall into the Mechanical Engineering and Building Services industry.

Our client is a specialized HVAC engineering and building services design firm providing mechanical system planning, layout, and performance engineering for commercial, industrial, educational, institutional, and healthcare facilities. They focus on delivering efficient, code-compliant, and cost-effective heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system designs tailored to each project’s unique architectural and environmental requirements.

Their team collaborates closely with architects, mechanical engineers, contractors, facility managers, and construction professionals to develop solutions that support energy efficiency, indoor air quality, occupant comfort, and long-term operational reliability. Their design approach incorporates ASHRAE standards, local building codes, sustainability principles, and state-of-the-art HVAC modeling tools to ensure system performance and lifecycle value.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop HVAC mechanical system designs, layouts, and fabrication drawings for commercial, industrial, and institutional building projects.
  • Create ductwork layout, piping schematics, hydronic system diagrams, air distribution plans, equipment schedules, and control diagrams.
  • Perform heating & cooling load calculations, energy modeling, and airflow distribution analysis using industry standard HVAC software.
  • Prepare equipment selections (RTUs, VAV/VRF systems, boilers, chillers, heat pumps, air handlers, terminal units, exhaust systems, etc.).
  • Produce construction documents, including plans, details, schematics, and specifications using Revit MEP, AutoCAD MEP, and BIM coordination platforms.
  • Collaborate with architectural and structural teams to integrate HVAC designs seamlessly into building layouts.
  • Conduct site visits for measurements, equipment verification, and construction coordination.
  • Work with contractors during bidding, procurement, installation, testing, and commissioning phases.
  • Ensure all designs comply with:
    • ASHRAE Standards
    • International Mechanical Code (IMC)
    • Uniform Mechanical Code (UMC)
    • NFPA and local jurisdiction building codes
    • LEED and energy efficiency requirements (when applicable)
  • Review submittals and shop drawings, address RFIs, and provide ongoing project design support.
  • Participate in client meetings to clarify design scope, discuss project requirements, and review engineering solutions.

Education

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, HVAC Technology, Building Systems Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license or EIT certification preferred (not required).
  • Additional training or certification in energy modeling, sustainability, or building performance is highly beneficial.

Required Skills and Experience

  • 7+ years of hands-on experience in HVAC design / mechanical building systems design for commercial or industrial facilities.
  • Proficiency in Revit MEP, AutoCAD MEP, and BIM coordination workflows.
  • Experience with HVAC load calculation and system modeling software, such as:
    • Trane Trace 3D Plus
    • Carrier HAP
    • EnergyPlus / eQUEST / IESVE (a plus)
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Duct and pipe sizing principles
    • Airflow and psychrometric analysis
    • Hydronic heating and cooling systems
    • VRF/VRV systems, VAV systems, and central utility plant components
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural plans, structural plans, specifications, and technical submittals.
  • Knowledge of IAQ (Indoor Air Quality) standards, ventilation calculations, and ASHRAE 62.1/90.1 requirements.
  • Familiarity with LEED guidelines, energy code compliance, and Sustainability-driven HVAC design practices.
  • Excellent communication skills for interaction with clients, project managers, engineers, and contractors.
  • Strong technical problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with chiller/boiler systems, cooling towers, heat recovery ventilation, and building automation controls (BAS).
  • Background in design/build construction environments or MEP consulting.
  • Prior experience coordinating with architects, GC’s, and trade contractors during construction.
  • Familiarity with CFD airflow simulation and performance modeling tools.
  • Understanding of commissioning procedures, balancing reports, and post-installation system performance verification.
