Typical Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform installation, start-up, commissioning, maintenance, calibration, and repair of industrial automation systems, AC/DC motors, drives, and PLC-based control systems at customer sites.
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues involving electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems, minimizing downtime and maintaining productivity.
- Conduct on-site diagnostics using multimeters, oscilloscopes, signal analyzers, and industrial network analyzers for Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus, and DeviceNet systems.
- Execute control system upgrades, firmware updates, and parameter tuning for VFDs, servos, and soft starters.
- Read and interpret electrical schematics, P&IDs, control panel layouts, and single-line diagrams to guide system integration and repair efforts.
- Collaborate with engineering, project management, and manufacturing teams to ensure smooth field deployment of automation and motion systems.
- Program, configure, and debug PLCs and HMIs using platforms such as Allen-Bradley (RSLogix/Studio 5000), Siemens TIA Portal, Schneider Electric EcoStruxure, and Mitsubishi GX Works.
- Conduct field retrofits, wiring modifications, and equipment calibrations in accordance with NFPA 70E, UL 508A, and IEC 60204 standards.
- Perform preventive maintenance inspections (PMIs) and document findings through detailed service reports and test data following ISO 9001 quality management practices.
- Support customer training, ensuring operators and maintenance staff are proficient in system operation, safety procedures, and troubleshooting.
- Assist with remote diagnostics, providing technical support to field clients via VPN or industrial IoT interfaces.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA safety regulations, lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures, and company EHS (Environmental, Health, and Safety) policies during all site activities.
- Travel domestically and occasionally internationally to customer facilities, often in demanding industrial and outdoor environments.
Education
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechatronics, Industrial Automation, or related field.
- Technical certifications such as PLC Programming Certificate, VFD/Drive Commissioning Certification, or Electrical Journeyman License are highly valued.
- Safety and quality certifications such as OSHA 30, NFPA 70E, ISA CCST, or UL 508A Panel Builder credentials are preferred.
Required Skills and Experience
- 7+ years of hands-on field experience servicing and maintaining industrial automation systems, drives, motors, and control panels in heavy industry environments.
- Strong working knowledge of PLC and HMI programming and troubleshooting (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Schneider, Mitsubishi, or Omron).
- Experience with VFDs, soft starters, and servo drives (ABB, Siemens, Rockwell Automation, Yaskawa, Danfoss, or Parker Hannifin).
- Proficiency in reading electrical drawings, performing loop checks, and conducting I/O validation.
- Deep understanding of industrial communication protocols (Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP/IP, DeviceNet, Profibus DP, Profinet, CANopen).
- Skilled in electrical and mechanical troubleshooting, including motors, sensors, encoders, actuators, and relay logic circuits.
- Familiarity with industrial SCADA systems, data acquisition software, and HMI visualization tools such as FactoryTalk View, WinCC, or Wonderware InTouch.
- Proficient in using calibration and diagnostic instruments for testing current loops, voltage signals, and process instrumentation.
- Experience with instrumentation and control systems (I&C) such as flow, pressure, level, and temperature transmitters.
- Knowledge of electrical codes and standards including NFPA 70 (NEC), IEC 61131-3, UL 508A, and IEEE 519 (Harmonic Standards).
- Strong technical writing and reporting abilities for documenting service visits, corrective actions, and system performance data.
- Ability to work independently, travel frequently, and adapt to changing customer environments under tight project deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
- Background in commissioning industrial drives and motor control centers (MCCs) for heavy process industries.
- Experience in power distribution systems, including switchgear, transformers, and protective relay testing.
- Familiarity with industrial automation software tools like RSLogix 5000, Siemens Step 7/TIA Portal, AutoCAD Electrical, and EPLAN Electric P8.
- Knowledge of renewable energy systems such as wind turbines, solar inverters, and battery storage controls.
- Understanding of process control instrumentation and PID loop tuning for automation optimization.
- Prior experience supporting commissioning, FAT (Factory Acceptance Test), and SAT (Site Acceptance Test) procedures.
- Experience in data logging, predictive maintenance, and IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things) integration.
- Exposure to ABB 800xA, Honeywell Experion, or Emerson DeltaV DCS environments a plus.
- Excellent communication, client relations, and team collaboration skills in customer-facing roles.
