Company Overview
Our client is a well-established precision manufacturer specializing in high-volume metal stampings, flat spring products, formed metal components, retaining devices, and other precision-engineered parts supplied into a wide variety of industrial, aerospace, defense, medical, and commercial applications.
Operating in a fast-paced manufacturing environment, the company designs and produces complex components from spring steels, stainless alloys, specialty metals, and other engineered materials. Their operation relies heavily on precision tooling, progressive dies, stamping dies, forming dies, fixtures, and custom manufacturing equipment to support high-volume production.
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Senior Tool & Die Maker to join a growing manufacturing operation supporting high-volume precision metal stamping and forming processes.
This position will play a key role in the design, construction, troubleshooting, repair, and continuous improvement of complex production tooling. The successful candidate will serve as a senior technical resource within the toolroom, supporting production, engineering, quality, and maintenance teams while mentoring junior toolmakers and machinists.
This is a hands-on role requiring strong manual machining, toolmaking, die construction, and problem-solving capabilities.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, modify, and repair progressive dies, stamping dies, forming dies, fixtures, gauges, jigs, and related tooling.
- Troubleshoot tooling-related production issues and implement corrective actions.
- Diagnose root causes of premature tool wear, breakage, dimensional variation, and quality concerns.
- Improve tooling performance, reliability, cycle times, and overall production efficiency.
- Operate manual and CNC machine tools including mills, lathes, grinders, EDM equipment, and other precision toolroom machinery.
- Manufacture replacement tooling components from tool steels, hardened materials, and specialty alloys.
- Interpret engineering drawings, CAD models, blueprints, GD&T callouts, and manufacturing specifications.
- Support engineering efforts related to tooling development, design improvements, manufacturability, and prototype tooling.
- Perform precision inspections using micrometers, indicators, optical comparators, CMMs, and other metrology equipment.
- Document tooling repairs, modifications, maintenance activities, and process improvements.
- Mentor junior toolmakers, machinists, and setup personnel on best practices and troubleshooting techniques.
- Participate in continuous improvement, lean manufacturing, and cost-reduction initiatives.
Required Qualifications
- 6+ years of Tool & Die Making, Die Repair, Toolroom Machining, or related experience.
- Experience building, repairing, and troubleshooting tooling used in high-volume metal stamping environments.
- Strong manual machining skills including mills, lathes, surface grinders, and precision fitting.
- Experience reading and interpreting GD&T and complex engineering drawings.
- Ability to work independently on highly complex tooling projects with minimal supervision.
- Strong understanding of tooling materials, heat treatment, wear characteristics, and precision manufacturing practices.
Preferred Qualifications
- Progressive die experience.
- Experience supporting high-volume stamping, forming, or precision metal component manufacturing.
- CNC programming and CAD/CAM experience.
- Wire EDM or sinker EDM experience.
- Apprenticeship, trade school, journeyman toolmaker certification, or equivalent technical training.
- Previous experience mentoring or leading junior toolmakers.
