Company Overview
Our client is a precision gear manufacturing company specializing in high-tolerance components used in demanding industrial and aerospace applications. Their facility is equipped with advanced CNC machining, cylindrical grinding, gear cutting, and inspection equipment, supporting complex production requirements and strict quality standards.
The organization operates a modern machining environment that includes CNC turning centers, vertical machining centers, cylindrical grinders, gear hobbing machines, and advanced metrology systems.
Due to continued growth, they are seeking an experienced CNC Grinding Machinist capable of performing high-level setups and troubleshooting on precision ID/OD grinding equipment.
Position Summary
The CNC Grinding Machinist will be responsible for setting up, operating, and troubleshooting CNC cylindrical grinders used in the production of precision components. This position requires a strong understanding of grinding processes, blueprint interpretation, and tight-tolerance machining.
The ideal candidate will be a hands-on problem solver with experience performing complex setups, adjusting programs, selecting grinding wheels, and maintaining process stability in a high-precision manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Setup and operate CNC ID/OD cylindrical grinding machines
- Perform complex machine setups and changeovers
- Select appropriate grinding wheels and tooling based on material and tolerance requirements
- Establish and adjust work offsets and tool offsets
- Interpret and edit CNC programs as needed to maintain process control
- Diagnose and resolve machine alarms and machining issues
- Troubleshoot and correct dimensional issues such as:
- Run-out
- Surface finish
- Flatness
- Roundness
- Interpret blueprints, GD&T, and inspection reports
- Perform in-process inspection using precision measuring equipment
- Maintain tight tolerance production requirements
- Work closely with engineering and quality teams to maintain process capability
- Assist with training and mentoring junior machinists and operators
- Follow all safety procedures and maintain a clean work area in accordance with 5S and quality management standards
Equipment Used
This facility utilizes a wide range of advanced equipment including:
- Studer CNC cylindrical grinders
- Junker OD grinders
- CNC turning centers
- Vertical machining centers
- Gear hobbing and gear grinding equipment
- Advanced metrology systems including CMM and optical inspection systems
Experience with Studer, Kellenberger, Junker, Landis, or similar cylindrical grinding platforms is highly preferred.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience operating and setting up CNC grinding equipment
- Strong understanding of ID/OD cylindrical grinding processes
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and GD&T
- Experience performing machine setups and process adjustments
- Experience using precision inspection tools including:
- ID/OD micrometers
- Dial bore gauges
- Calipers
- Indicators
- Ability to troubleshoot machining issues independently
- Strong understanding of metal cutting properties and machining fundamentals
Preferred Experience
- Experience in gear manufacturing, aerospace, or precision machining
- Experience with Studer or similar cylindrical grinding machines
- CNC program editing experience
- Familiarity with CMM reports and advanced inspection techniques
- Experience working in ISO or AS9100 quality environments
