Our client is a leading mechanical services provider supporting office buildings, hospitals, universities, retail centers, distribution facilities, and large‑scale commercial properties.
Their field service teams install, repair, and maintain complex HVAC systems including rooftop units (RTUs), air handlers, VAV systems, heat pumps, boilers, chillers, and VRF/VRV systems. As an HVAC Helper, you will support experienced technicians, gain hands‑on field experience, and develop the skills needed to advance into a full HVAC Technician role.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist HVAC Technicians with installation, maintenance, and repair of commercial HVAC systems.
- Help with setting equipment, running ductwork, installing piping, and preparing materials and tools.
- Support troubleshooting efforts for HVAC equipment including RTUs, AHUs, VAVs, heat pumps, and split systems.
- Assist with refrigerant recovery, leak detection, vacuuming, and system charging under supervision.
- Perform basic tasks such as filter changes, coil cleaning, belt replacements, lubrication, and equipment inspections.
- Help with electrical tasks including wiring, conduit installation, and component replacement under guidance.
- Load, unload, and organize tools, equipment, and jobsite materials.
- Assist with reading and interpreting mechanical drawings, wiring diagrams, and installation instructions.
- Support technicians during system startups, commissioning, and functional testing.
- Maintain clean and safe work areas, following all safety protocols and PPE requirements.
- Document work performed, materials used, and jobsite conditions as directed.
- Communicate effectively with technicians, supervisors, and customers.
- Participate in ongoing training, skill development, and HVAC certification programs.
Education
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Technical school training in HVAC/R or mechanical systems preferred.
Required Skills and Experience
- 1–3 years of experience assisting with HVAC installation, service, or maintenance (commercial experience preferred).
- Basic understanding of HVAC systems, mechanical components, and refrigeration principles.
- Ability to use hand tools, power tools, gauges, meters, and basic diagnostic equipment.
- Willingness to learn, follow instructions, and work in a fast‑paced field environment.
- Ability to lift heavy equipment, work on ladders, and perform physical labor.
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and commitment to safety.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
- EPA 608 Certification (Type I or II) preferred but not required.
- Technical school HVAC/R certificate or coursework.
- Experience working with commercial HVAC equipment or mechanical contractors.
- Familiarity with BAS systems such as Tridium Niagara, Metasys, or Siemens Desigo.
- Interest in advancing to HVAC Technician or Controls Technician roles.
